Opening My Eyes to the Battle

I never thought much about war when I was younger. It seemed like something distant—something that happened overseas, something I only saw in history books or on the news. But I’ve come to realize that war isn’t always fought with guns or tanks. There’s a war happening every day, and it’s much closer to home. It’s spiritual, and it’s very real.

Spiritual warfare is not just a dramatic term we throw around in church. It’s the very real struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, truth and lies. And the battleground isn’t somewhere out there—it’s right here, in our minds, in our hearts, and in our homes.

The Nature of the Fight

This war isn't fought with fists or firepower. It’s fought with truth. It's fought with faith. And most importantly, it’s fought with the Word of God.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”— Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

We often think our enemies are the people who hurt us, betray us, or try to hold us back. But the real enemy—the one pulling the strings behind the scenes—is Satan. He’s not attacking us with swords, but with lies. His strategy is to get us to believe things that are not true so that we live like those lies are reality.

The Devil is After the Truth

Satan wants to deceive you so he can destroy you. And the only way he can do that is to convince you of a lie. He’ll say:

  • “You’re not good enough.”

  • “God doesn’t really love you.”

  • “You’ll always be stuck in this situation.”

  • “You can’t change.”

But Jesus said something powerful in John 8:32:

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Freedom doesn’t come from trying harder—it comes from believing what’s true. Satan knows that. That’s why he fights the truth with everything he has.

You’re Already in the War—So Fight!

Whether you realize it or not, you’re already on the battlefield. This isn’t a choice. The moment you gave your life to Christ, you were enlisted. And the enemy is not going to back down just because you don’t feel like fighting.

You’ve got to learn to fight back, and that starts with recognizing the battlefield.

The mind is a major front in spiritual warfare. That’s why Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

You’ve got to take your thoughts captive. You’ve got to compare them with God’s Word and say, “Is this true or is this a lie?” If it’s a lie, throw it out. Don’t give it room to live in your heart.

Don’t Just Endure—Engage

Too many believers are living in defeat, not because they lack faith, but because they’ve stopped fighting. They’ve accepted things God never told them to accept. They’ve surrendered to depression, anxiety, addiction, fear, bitterness—not realizing those are all weapons of the enemy.

Spiritual warfare is not just surviving until Sunday. It’s standing up every day and saying, “I will not let the enemy take ground in my life.”

We are not helpless. God has equipped us with weapons that work. He’s given us:

  • The belt of truth

  • The breastplate of righteousness

  • The shield of faith

  • The helmet of salvation

  • The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God(see Ephesians 6:13-17)

We don’t fight from a place of fear—we fight from a place of victory. Jesus already won the war. We’re just here to enforce the victory.

Watch and Pray

Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 26:41:

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Spiritual warfare requires awareness. We can’t sleepwalk through life and expect to walk in victory. We have to watch and pray—to stay alert to the enemy’s tactics and stay connected to God in prayer.

Prayer is not just a request line—it’s a war room. It’s where battles are won. When you pray, you invite heaven into your situation. You call on the power of God to push back the forces of darkness.

You’re Not Alone

One of Satan’s greatest tactics is isolation. He wants you to believe you’re the only one struggling. The only one who feels this way. The only one going through it. But that’s a lie too.

The church is a body. We’re meant to fight together. To encourage one another. To lift each other up in prayer. You don’t have to fight alone.

And most importantly, God is with you.

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”— 1 John 4:4 (KJV)

Final Thoughts: Take Your Stand

If you’ve felt like giving up lately, hear me when I say: Don’t. You’re not crazy. You’re not weak. You’re in a war, and the pressure you feel is real. But so is your power.
